Well exhaust packing was a waste of time

I just removed the baffles on my VH Cruzers to replace the existing fiberglass wrapping with exhaust wadding, after fucking about for ages trying to get them back in and lined up the screw hole, they sound exactly the same if not a little louder than before I started!
Is there any kind of DIY I can do to quiet them down a touch? Also is back pressure going to be an issue? From what I understand not enough back pressure makes the bike run leaner, and it doesnt have a power commander or anything but does have stock air filter.
