Subject: VX 800 engine noise (video link) Sat Aug 24, 2013 8:05 pm
Hello from Canada,
Just picked up a beautiful 1990 VX 800 about a week ago, runs great but nothing is ever perfect...the engine makes annoying noise once it warms up. It is audible in 3000-5000 rpm range when accelerating, it is almost always there when decelerating using the engine until I downshift to a lower gear. I have an idea what it is and hope to be right, however I would like to get a second opinion before I take it apart. The below link is to a short video I hope you will be able to hear what I'm talking about.
Thanks for any advice!
I just found out that I can't post external links as a new member for seven days so pm me for the video link, thx.

He're's the video, I had a listen, I'm unable to hear anything out of the ordinary sorry, I think it's something you might have to listen to in real life to gain an idea as to what it is.

He're's video 2 of the same bike and engine noise, I still can't hear anything out of the ordinary (headphones or speakers) The 800 engine is quite a noisy top end engine to say the least, I notice you point the camera towards the bottom end as though it's big end knocking? that would only knock under load I would have thought and balance out on steady revs, It's not clutch rattle is it? Sorry I'm not much help but I don't have the sound system to get to hear it as I'd like to, More info would be helpful if possible.

Thanks for posting the videos, and your input. I understand that it is rather difficult to try to diagnose such a thing from a video...
My take on the metal rattle is that a camshaft tensioners are on its way out, and need to be replaced, in the mean time, I think that I will just have to live with it and wait until it gets worse and than worry about it....

Problem solved, I guess I was little paranoid it was the right side exhaust pipe. When sitting in traffic today I put my foot on top of the pipe, applied a bit of pressure, and the noise was gone...
I guess that the paranoia stems from the fact that I bought the bike in such a great shape for so little money ($1700) I don't have any pictures yet but I will soon fix that.
The next step will be to find a nice fairing, one of the short ones....
