| After several hours over the last few days sanding and polishing my VS1400 drive it's finally done. I'm taking my stock drive and spacer to be machined in a few days and need to fit the new seals. It should be finished next week. When the drive arrived it was damaged so I'm pleased with the job I've done on it. The damage to the drive case. After sanding. Finished. All nice and shiny. | |

| You are going to fall in love all over again Rattler, glad you are finally getting it done. Changes the gearing and they are also longer gears, really wakes the bike up. Read (THIS) in the Modifications done section. | |

| Ok I'm confused. I started removing what I think is the seal expecting to find the circlip. Where is it? This seal seams to be tucked in and is a right pain to get off. | |

| That's the 800 seal, It's rubber coated metal, where the metal changes colour is the joint of the seal, grip it with some grips and twist and the joint will open up, then prise it off with a large flat screwdriver or similar and it will pull up and away from the shaft and housing, The Circlip is behind that, don't worry about fucking the seal up, it's already knackered, when your replacing the 1400 seal, It's more like a fork seal that fits within the hole as opposed to over it. | |

| Any tips on removing this seal to get to the circlip on the 800 drive? Can't budge the damn thing. Tried loosening it with grips. | |

| I just used a hammer and screwdriver It isn't being re fitted, so I just tapped the edge till a gap appeared then prized it gently off with a screwdriver working my way round it till it was removable by hand. | |

| So you snapped your Circlip pliers trying to open it up instead of squeezing it together and lifting it out, Even when you squeeze it together it's pretty tight to get out, tough little circlip that one. | |

| Looking at the diagram from the workshop manual..the spring in the shaft slides in and then there should be a bolt? Well mine doesn't have one, the spring just slides out. Also the spring I ordered for to replace is nothing like the one on the 800. It's much larger in circumference and shorter in height. | |

| I've not dismantled the VS1400 drive yet so can't compare but if it is wrong I can just use the original VS1400 spring yeah. | |

| If you have ordered the VS1400 spring as a replacement for the VL800 spring, yes it is much larger and should be used if you have it. | |

| How does it fit in the end of the shaft? It's way too big. Also when shortening the shaft should it have the slight taper on the very end that it has stock? | |

| It just fits in the the gap (stopper bearing) you have removed the drive shaft end from and the drive shaft pushes against it. | |

| Ok nice one Dave. When the length of the shaft is shortened does there need to have the taper like when it's stock? The photos look to be without it but others look like they may have it. | |

| I had mine tapered slightly, to make it slip into the universal joint easier. | |

| Have it milled back by 3"/16th's so it's the correct length, and then just round the edge off the end of the splines slightly so it slides into the universal joint easier, no where near as much as stock though, like the top one in the pic. | |

| Which end of the spacer gets the length taken off? The thinner part drops into the drive. | |

| I've dropped the shaft and spacer off. The guy was saying that with the description in this image it says that 3/8" is taken back and 3/8" forward into the spline to make the 3/16". Is that correct? | |

| The thin end of the spacer is easiest but any end will do, Machine the "end" of the shaft back 3/16ths and the shoulder back 3/16ths, don't mill into the splines! Mill them both in the same direction! towards the end that goes into the drive. There's an arrow between the two lines pointing in the direction it needs milling in the photo above, where it says machine shoulder back! "NOTHING" should be 3/8ths "NOTHING" or it'll be wrong. | |

Fuck that, you are allowing a fucking idiot that can not read simple instructions and drawings to do your modification. We have not said that anywhere & if you are getting instructions & pictures from elsewhere then ask them & not us as it is making a simple job sound harder than it is. I do not want anyone put off doing this easy modification that I have explained in full in the "Modifications Done" section due to there lack of ability to understand what both myself & Sim have written in the other thread.

| I only have Internet access on my phone. Images on here don't always show up for whatever reason. Yes I have instructions but not always images. I managed to email the pics to my mrs at work to print off so I had a couple of things with instructions to give him. I got the other image from the VR forum where I could see the image. Typical as right now they are all showing up. I text him last night and he knows he misread what it says. I sometimes over think things which do complicate things and I know that. | |

| Rattler just keep asking the questions mate, as people don't always have the patience & respond in the best ways and have the courtesy & consideration we always should. I would rather you keep asking the questions and get it right & enjoy the end product in the way you should. Better to over think an issue than not think enough, I would rather you ask the questions that make it clear in your own mind. | |

Elongate the holes and test fit the drive a few times before fitting the shaft and seal in the drive, It makes for final fitting without hiccup
