BOSS - Boy to Man Exhaust Note

Decision made - After the Route 59 run last week and hearing the other's exhaust note, I've decided its time for my BOSS to join the club, so its time  to drill the baffles.  What size drill and how deep is the question?

Do the 20mm sds drill bit down the centres first John, first plate is about seven inches in and the second is about 12"

Let's the depth out and if it's loud and deep enough for you then great as your pipes will still look stock.

Are you about tomorrow John? I could call round in the van, I've got plenty of stuff in there for drilling various holes.

Certainly can be Sim and much appreciated. Have some work to do at Dad's - what times good for you?

Recommend high melting point grease, very high melting point grease OR

Your right there John, sims got a BIG Harley now so friction and speed will be an issue John-boss if sim starts on about torque, gearing and smoothness of ride you better run for the hills boy

If sims got a big Harley then vibration could be uncomforable and stopping almost impossible

Didn't think of that John! No its ok if alan stands behind sim and holds his hips level penetration of the "drill" shouldn't be more than a slight judder and if john-boss leans round and holds onto the shaft of the drill it should remove all vibration! As for stopping, I believe once the blockage has been removed the drill should come slowly to a halt don't want to rush it in case it snags and jams in the hole

Indeed the deed has been done and Sim the gentleman that he is, was very gentle.  We know now Sim likes an Audience when he performs - several spectators watching and filming the action failed to put him of his stroke - I sense a new career for him!  I hasten to add Pillion Missus thought the whole episode a little to graphic and went indoors, making Coffee and Bacon Butties to revive Sim after his exertions.

Does Sound deeper john Drilling the back plates will increase the noise level, not to aftermarket but loud enough! Do it in stages, I  did the baffle and back plates at the same time but after a while you don't notice the difference unless you park up to an identical bike that hasn't had the holes done and then the smug smile comes back and you go yeh mine sounds way better than yours. Don't forget to hammerite the plates surrounding the baffle esp if you drill them that plates the first part of the bike to start rusting.

That would explain sims eagerness last year in Hornfluer! just as well Jo was with him or there would have been a new record for holes drilled

Have given it some thought, have listened to those who know best and figured a way of getting it past Pillion Missus (of sorts).  Think I've plucked up enough courage, so with the aid of a small drill (nothing like the monster Sim has) the back plates are getting it this week.  Thought I'd start with 10mm at 12, 3,6 & 9 o'clock - or any other suggestions please?

Good start! The actual position of holes doesn't make a difference but spacing them the way you plan will look good and leaves you space for another 4 holes in each if you want louder! look, listen, ride! and adjust if necessary

Yeah John, same as I did it, Increased the holes from 10mm to 15mm and ended up at 20mm, you'll know when you've got the sound you're happy with, good luck John with you're 'solo hole drilling' , and cheer up Sim, theres sure to be other members who want their holes drilled

I'd go for 10mm holes john and the position's you said make sense and will look a neat job I wouldn't go any bigger with the holes it don't make that much of a difference if you want it louder after 10mm holes just get a new exhaust and feel the real thunder

Done - 4 x 10mm holes in each back plate - repainted with VHT Matt Black paint.  Looks good and sounds much better.   Nice deep burble with a bit of a growl. - Thanks guys for the advice and again to Sim for getting the ball rolling with the baffles.

I've told her nothing - she's read it herself, then as only females can, maked up the bits inbetween with their own unique sense of imagination and lo and behold - you're a very bad man.  I'll try to plead mercy on you with her, but expeiance tells me it may be a fruitles exercise.  On a lighter note, if she kills you I can have your bikes (but not the Kellogg one thanks)
