Subject: Tachometer on a M800??? Mon Apr 21, 2014 9:49 pm
Hi Members
Today when i am riding (I was wondering), why i have not a tachometer on my bike? So anyone knows if it will possible to do it on a M800 or similar? Picks, links and all your pro knowledge it will be most appreciate..and so on.
The better place will be in the center of the handlebar.
I saw on HD's and other ones here using only a watch where i want to put mine tacho. I think that's more useful (for me, of course) having a tacho than a watch.
P.S. If possible a "cheaper one" but of course, that it works not only a month or so…

Hi Jose, I've had one of these fitted to mine for the past year or so, works ok and gives a readout of highest revs reached, hours ridden and a few other bits n pieces. http://suzuki800.forumotion.co.uk/t1440-cheap-electronic-tacho

Hi Sim and thanks so much for you are always here helping this noobie One thing that i didn't understand if the TT tacho wire is ONLY wrapped around ONE coil?
I saved this that Mr Intruder said: Just been browsing and this unit works straight out of the box for years up to 2004, from 2005 because of the dual coils you need to change the PPL. So just to get the RPM right, ignore stages 2 & 3 and just do stage 1. You need to change it to 0.5. from my research.
This tacho is only on sale in Usa? Because i saw this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Digital-Red-LED-Tachometer-Tacho-Gauge-RPM-For-Adjust-Motorcycle-Brand-New-/301027844303?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4616a860cf
But it seems too much wires and stuff and so…… :7348:

José just follow Mr Intruders instructions and everything will be spot on. The Tacho in question uses different settings for different bikes and works off of the info from a single coil rather than two coils on later models such as yours. Quite a few members on here run that tacho

Ok, but since this tacho is only (as i checked) from usa it will take too much time and tax expenses since is not from EEC.
I saw on evilbay this and have the same installation procedure and it's more cheaper (please, don't laugh about the 1st video, ok? : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Spark-Plugs-Engine-Digital-Tach-Hour-Meter-Tachometer-Gauge-/321234666271?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4acb14031f
This one is great, but it's on sale only in usa… :7348:

Yeah crash, mine came from the USA but it only took a couple of weeks to arrive,They're about £25 on eBay delivered. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trail-Tech-TTO-Tach-Hour-Meter-Gauge-Motorcycle-ATV-Engine-Tachometer-/190811342759?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c6d3e07a7
They say about wiring installation: 6.Red short line lock positive electrode…What does this mean?? Black short line lock negative electrode…What does this mean??
Green line contacts signal…What does this mean??
I like so much this gauge, because is in chrome, have black background and red light as the M800 . And it will be great to attach it in the center of the handlebar

Red is positive ( + ) Black is negative ( - ) Green is signal from ignition coil.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I would presume that would mean Red to a positive feed Black to a negative feed Green to wrap around the spark plug lead
I like it that would look cool

Hi guys...but what's the difference between: Steen G said: Red is positive ( + ) Black is negative ( - ) Green is signal from ignition coil.
captain crash said: Red to a positive feed Black to a negative feed Green to wrap around the spark plug lead
The other problem ( i think) is with the green wire: There's no problem to make an extension wire til wrap around the spark plug coil?????
Hi Sim: I think that it works as your tacho: 1 wrap wire around 1 coil :what1: Hi alfie92: For sure if i purchase this tacho, ( and for this i am depending all of you) i will insert here the diagram, no problem.
Cheers and thanks to all because you are always here to help me
P.S. And one more thing: The ebay seller said this:
Specifications: 1. Easy to install ........... Installation: Professional installation is highly recommended
First is easy to install and after………… will have to be done by a pro?????????
Subject: Re: Tachometer on a M800??? Fri Apr 25, 2014 6:59 am
There would be no problem with extending any of the wires IF that was required. They are just covering themselves from all angles just in-case a complete idiot buys the unit by saying easy to install but professional installation highly recommended. They are very easy to install my friend, if you have the ability to wire in a household plug then you will not have an issue with this unit as they are so simple.
However as Sim has said 'Is it adjustable for the later models having dual coils?',it is worth asking the seller just to be sure.
It would definitely look great on the bike and is a great price.

Hi Dave I will ask him and after i will post here, ok? Thanks for your "cruel and direct answer about this electrical household idiot" When i was very young, i did a f****** experience: i cut with a razor an electrical wire and the result was i got an electric shock that i raised my feet over the floor. From there on I got phobia by everything that has to do with electricity, wires and so on...

The way I read this post is (+ plus red)goes to the live side of coil,(- neg black) goes to neg side of coil leaving (green signal wire) to ht spark plug lead.If this is not correct please reply, hope this makes it easier to understand.A lot of tacho's just run off a wire round the HT lead, using their own battery for power.

To avoid any mistake i asked directly the seller to explain very carefully where the (+) (-) and the green one will be attached/wrapped and also about the later models having dual coils!!!
I saw this on the service manual:

Well guys i received today a reply from one of two sellers i contacted about:
TaurusTuga asked: I need to know please if Is it adjustable for the later models having dual coils? When you say: Red short line lock positive electrode Black short line lock negative electrode Green line contacts signal
You mean: Red to connect to (+) battery Black to connect to (-) battery Green to wrap around the spark plug coil?
This is what he answered: Yes it's just what you said and compatible with dual coils, no instructions included.
No instructions????
Perhaps it's more wise waiting for the answer from the other seller to know also what he says, ok? :what1:

Same as mine, but mine is battery powered LCD, that one just needs electrics to light the LED in the display.

I am not so sure, because another seller have the same tacho BUT say on behind it (selecting 4,6 and 8 cylinders :what1: ) not for our twin bikes :7348:
Subject: Re: Tachometer on a M800??? Tue Apr 29, 2014 7:53 am
No that one is not for twins but you need to find out if the one you are looking at is for twins' the same item would be easily changed at manufacture for twins.

alfie92 Be aware of what they said about shipping time arrival. If by any chance you purchased from another seller that have the same advert layout as the link i left here…..sorry but one of those said me today this: It will be shipped directly from our supplier in China. Estimated delivery: between 15 May and 4 jun :7348: :7348:
This means more taxes for a non EEC country or full refund because of false shipping info details, ok?
Hi Dave: But that's why i didn't want to go ahead so soon, if they don't say exactly all about i need to know, to avoid spend money, time and worries.

it's under the fuel tank, Either coil is situated just under the rubber lugs that hold the front of the tank in place, Read the manual for more insight into the wiring and position, Pages 8-18 and 8-19

I'll look into that Jose If you download the C800/VL800/C50 2005 to current owners manual in the meantime it's the same specs for the engine and electrical components as the M800/M50, Page 8-18 and 8-19 gives pictures of the coil layout/placement and wiring.

Hi Sim, so sorry to be so stupid and noobie with electrical things&stuffs, but please pay attention with these 2 photos i send: The first one taken from the user manual 8-18, 8-19:
I assume that the (-) negative is where i need to attach the green wire to the tacho work.
But the second one was taken from a 2010 M800 like mine and i see clearly the ignition coil and cap where the spark plug will be connected.
So, why i cannot find this in the pages you sent, neither on the photos, or perhaps i'm blind ?

Hi alfie92 thanks for the photos because now i see where it is...but we have to pay attention because in the user manual:
So,i think the (+) is the white and black/yellow and the negative (-) they must have (certainly) a green wire somewhere. or maybe in the ignition coil a engraved (+) and (-) like this:
If i have time i will check this on weekend to see more clearly how and where to connect it, because i don't what to damage anything on my bike with guesses!!

Subject: Re: Tachometer on a M800??? Thu May 08, 2014 8:13 pm
Well that did not work,so must be the white on the rear No1 engine (rear) this wire goes to ECM which I think must be in place of the old distributor.Certainly not sure so (do not try this on my say so) will try it out in a couple of days.

Hi Jose I understand what you say, when you take your front panel off to get at the coil go for the clutch side easier to get at,to take the coil off there are two allen key screws to take off,not the easiest thing to get off that is why I have not taken mine off,I can not tell you if the coils are marked as I said not taken mine off.

Hi alfie92
I think the most secure way to avoid damages and questions and searches and so on…it's to buy one like Sim: no wires, only wrap around the spark plug coil..and let's go riding "til 8000 rpm's"
P.S. Perhaps with a flashing led light i can see if the ignition coil has any (+) and (-) :what1: And one more thing: i saw somewhere on an manual that the ignition 1 is for the front cylinder and the ignition 2 is for the one in rear.
