Subject: I fancy some badass apes on C800 Fri Oct 07, 2011 7:48 pm
I really am thinking of taking the plunge and getting some tall apes. Not sure what size (16"/18"?) I would not do the installation myself but get local dealer to do cables etc. Anyone got any ideas on this - what size would handle best on the C800? Maybe you can get a complete kit from somewhere - any suggestions? Perhaps a set of pointy grips would look good too (I presume I'd have to put on new grips anyway). Has anyone got tall apes - how do you find them? What shape is best? I'm open to suggestions here. Only requirement is they gotta look mean but not completely bugger the handling!

They are 16'' apes, cables and install will hurt your wallet in a big way! Make sure you work out what size cables you will require or you will end up like most people with apes and have a bike that has cables that look like they could be shorter, a little to much cable spoils the look in my opinion!

Very true, some bikes have their excellent look ruined by overly long cables

Make sure that there is enough cable to allow play for turning lock to lock.... and also I believe when I looked into this some years ago now , for a chop I was building at the time! The dreaded Construction and Use Regulations... Hands must not be above shoulder height when holding the bars in normal riding position !!
But you'd probably get away with it these days, as Boy Racers seem to on their saxo loud exhausts ... which are way over the prescribed decibal levels !!
I got extended cables for when I get round to apehangers ... most dealers can make up cables using your old ones for the mountings at each end.... BUT the electric cables are the difficult bits as any new joints have to be good and also weatherproof !
I'm gonna try a few local breakers to see if they got any scrap apes I can use for a mock up ...before spending dosh on the new ones!
So let us know how you get on CC............ Luck!

I have seen bikes with these apehangers on and often wondered how comfortable it is to have your arms stretching up to the bars, and can your feel you have full control of the bike? I may have missed the point and if thats the case please forgive the ramblings of an old git.

I must be honest I like apes and I would like them myself but I wouldn't go much above a 12" myself but totally respect the guys that go for high apes and an enhanced front rake.

Yes I think it's the whole no helmet, loud pipes, high bars thing - makes no sense but some cruiser guys just love it! One day I'll go all sensible I'm sure but I might not have finished the 'cool' trail yet! Not sure whether I'll go for the apes - if I do they'll be tall, otherwise I may as well stay with what I've got. It's nice to dream though!

I had to change the stock bars on my M800 for some 8" rise bars off of a (wait for it!) Harley fat bob . The reason being I found the stock bars had poor control at low speed in traffic..... higher /wider bars gave more leverage and improved the feel an awful lot !! I'd go up to 16" on apes .. because after that you're getting into the realms of impracticality. Probably some law of physics applies here ... about the optimum angle of leverage or something ?? However saying that .. I know a guy who runs 22" apes on a Triumph !! and swears by 'em... says they're easier on his knackered shoulder ? ... but I reckon he just likes showing off !!

Brilliant to see your bike is slowly morphing into a classic. :bike5:

Nice bike - shame about the bars! 16" would seem about right to me - tall enough to be kickass/short enough for reasonable control. Not riding my Intruder much now the roads are getting wetter so will shelve the idea of apes - for this year at least but thanks for the input guys.

I honestly wouldn't have thought so, but ape hangers are a mod that is made to look cool rather than improve handling or anything like that, albeit this is an extreme example. I love the fact that people make such extreme and wacky designs though, even if I wouldn't have one myself.

I agree with you what ever people do to their bike is purely up to them and good luck to them, (as they say one mans meat.) It was just an observation on the handling and control of the bike which must suffer with those bars and footrests.

I get the feeling that as long as he turns a few heads the guy on the crazy yellow bike is not too bothered how comfortable or in control he is! Yep, just look at those crazy pipes!
